For Andrea,
who has watched all of it
and never once looked away.
Who told me to do it for myself.

And for everyone reading this
on the morning they decided
to show up.

— Introduction

There are two words at the centre of this book. They are the entire method. They are the only thing I want you to remember when you put it down. Two words.

— The Rule
Show Up.

That is it. That is the whole thing. The rest of this book is two hundred and seventy-eight pages of what those two words mean, where they came from, why they work, and how to use them on the morning you do not want to use them.

I am writing this book because I needed it. I am a man who took nine years to make one decision. Nine years between the warning and the work. Nine years of telling myself I was being careful when what I was actually being was absent. The book you are holding is the one I wish someone had handed me on the morning I finally moved.

— Introduction

Here is what I have come to know. There are not many comebacks. There is one comeback. Yours looks different from mine, and mine looks different from the woman in the next chapter, and hers looks different from the man in the chapter after that. But underneath all of them is the same fight. Motivation lies. Discipline collapses. Results take longer than promised. The body wants to quit. The mind wants to quit. The day wants to quit you.

And the only thing that survives all of that is the decision to show up.

Not show up because you feel like it. You will not feel like it.

Not show up because you can see it working. For most of the year you will not see it working.

Not show up because anyone is watching. Most of your year, no one is watching.

Show up. That is the rule. That is the entire engine. That is what carried me from a man who slept through his own heart attack to a man writing this sentence on Day 285 of a year I declared in public the previous July.

I want to tell you how I got here. Not because my story is special. Because the shape of it is exactly the same shape as yours.

— Chapter One

There is a park near our apartment. My wife had been telling me to use it for years. You need to be physical. You need to do things. You need to exercise. It is important for you. It is important for your health. I always fought her on it.

That Sunday afternoon she asked me to take the three kids and the dog to the park for fifteen minutes while she got ready. I took them. I came back after twelve.

Read that sentence again. I came back after twelve.

Three minutes short of the smallest thing my wife had asked of me.

I sat down on the couch. Tennessee Whiskey was playing. The youngest had come into the kitchen having a tantrum and refused to go and play.

And then my wife said to her: "You're just like your father. You don't like to do physical things."

I did not feel angry. I did not feel surprised. I felt the air being hit out of me.

I looked up. The other two children were watching. My son — almost ten years old — was nodding. He was nodding in agreement.

That nod was heavier than the sentence.

My mind ran somewhere I had not let it go in a long time. Twenty-five years ago I was living in Madagascar. I was a volunteer. I survived a coup. I got out of the highlands through sixteen military checkpoints. A cyclone nearly killed me. I got malaria — twice — on expired medication. The Otter Trail. The Skeleton Coast. The Okavango Delta. Seventeen trips through Namibia and Botswana. I slept on the roof of a Land Rover under the Milky Way.

That was the man.

— Chapter One

This is the man. The one who came back from the park three minutes early. The one whose son has stopped bringing his football to the park because his father stands still.

Same body. Different soul.

I have a feeling you know this version of yourself too.

Maybe your version is different. Maybe yours is a job you keep telling yourself is temporary. A drink you keep telling yourself is the last one. A relationship you keep naming fine. A body you keep telling yourself you will deal with next year. The polite story we tell ourselves so the loud story does not have to be told.

There is exactly one thing that breaks the pattern. There is exactly one rule that, the moment you start to use it, ends a decade in a single afternoon.

— The Rule
Show Up.
— Try this · Before the next chapter

Take a piece of paper. Write one sentence. The sentence is: "The thing I have been naming wrong is ___." Fill in the blank. Do not edit. Do not soften. Whatever you wrote is the thing this book is about.

What this is for.

This sample serves the "Read a sample" CTA on the Shop page. It is also the asset to send to publishers, agents, and book press during pre-launch. The book is structured around one central philosophy — Show Up. — with each chapter taking one situation where the comeback breaks (fear, fatigue, plateau, doubt, the bad day, the day no one is watching) and showing the rule that holds. Personal stories from the founder's year. Reader exercises at the end of each chapter. A QR code at chapter ends opens the app where readers can practise what they just read.
